Step 1 Domain Name

One of the most important decisions you will have to make when starting a WordPress blog is choosing your domain name. Your domain name is your website address, also know as your URL.

Think of your domain name as similar to your house address, whatever you choose (www.yourdomainname.com) will be your address on the web.

Should my domain name contain keywords?

Managing to avail of a domain name containing keywords can prove difficult, especially with a .com. If you are lucky enough however, to find a domain name that is free containing one or two keywords, perfect!

Don’t get too hung up on a .com though. There are many other domain name extensions available with an increased chance of getting the domain name you are after. If your target audience is worldwide, then I would agree a .com or .net would be a better choice.

Use your imagination when choosing your domain name. Some of the most popular website domain names out there are made of catchy words that have little relevance, but are very easy to remember! such as Google, Yahoo, Yandex, Etsy, Godaddy. Some of the biggest companies in the world have the strangest domain names.

Should I purchase my domain name with my web host?

I would usually answer this question with a NO, due to previous experiences in the past with web hosting. Putting all your eggs in one basket, may not always be the wisest choice, unless you are 100% confident in your web host.

Most web hosting companies will offer a FREE domain name with their web hosting plans. This may sound great and convenient, but remember there is always a but!

What if things go wrong?

If you experience problems with your web host, you may want to change company. If you have however purchased your domain name with them, remember they hold the most important part of your website. Your domain name! redirecting your domain before your contract has expired can prove difficult.
